Sniff Test

Odor, Odor Go Away

As a seller, you want your home to stand out. But, be careful that it doesn’t remain in buyers’ minds for the wrong reasons. You live in your home and might be used to any smells that linger. Enlist the help of an honest friend, neighbor or family member to detect unpleasant smells.

Don’t just cover up smells, combat and tame them!

  • Have carpets, window coverings, blankets, furniture and other upholstered items that can trap smells professionally cleaned shortly before you list your home for sale. Don’t forget to vacuum regularly.
  • Wash windows and wash/repaint walls/trim. Smells, dirt, oil and smoke residue can be found on walls, windows and light fixtures. Open windows to let home air out.
  • Limit your spicy cooking while your home is for sale. Be sure to use windows for ventilation and exhaust fans every time you cook.
  • Bathe your pets regularly and wipe their paws before they re-enter the home. Consider washing/replacing any pet bedding or habitats before you list your home for sale. Change the litter and boxes for cats and clean litterboxes daily.
  • Change filters on HVAC systems at the beginning of each season. Have ductwork professionally cleaned.
  • Have fireplace/wood-burning stove and dryer vent(s) professionally cleaned. Eliminate as many ash, soot, dust and smoke sources as you can.

Best practices while your home is for sale:

  • Bake cookies right before a showing or an open house. (Buy prepackaged, proportioned frozen cookie dough and pop a few in the oven for simplicity.)
  • Keep fresh flowers and new potpourri in the kitchen and/or baths.
  • Cut up lemon slices and grind them in your garbage disposal regularly. Set out a fresh bowl of citrus fruit in dining areas.
  • Keep windows open when temperature allows. A cool breeze and fresh air always smell great!
  • Consider having an odoriferous pet live with a friend or another family member outside of the house until your home is sold.
