Know-How For Making A Claim

If you’ve suffered a loss with your home due to disaster or theft, check with your insurance agent as soon as possible to follow their claim procedure to ensure coverage.


Immediately after determining that everyone is safe and out of danger, contact your insurance company. They are likely to assign a claim representative to your case and can walk you through the claims process. This representative will be your go-to person for questions and assistance.


Often you will need to file a police report for thefts and accidents. Get a copy of the report.


In the case of damage from a disaster (accident, weather, etc.), take photos of the damage. Take down notes from the incident such as when, how and where everything happened. Save receipts for any work done or items purchased related to the damage.


If there are parts of your home exposed due to the damage, hire a firm to board up your roof or windows if the job is too big for you to handle.

Follow Up

Create a file with all information related to the incident. Document all phone calls with date, time and information shared. Save emails to your insurance company, contractors, and authorities. Add follow-up tasks to your calendar to ensure that claims (and replacements, repairs and/or payments) are being handled in a timely manner.
