CREDIT 2017

Keeping Your Info Secure

SHARE:
Because data breaches seem to occur more often than ever with retailers, banks, email providers, and more, it's a good idea to keep a close eye on your credit and protect yourself. In the new year resolve to put these tasks on your to-do list:
  • Change passwords regularly to any site that has sensitive, personal information. Schedule a date on your calendar to change passwords, perhaps every quarter or so.
  • Check your credit reports regularly for any discrepancies. At www.AnnualCreditReport.com you can request a free report from each of the three credit reporting agencies once per year. Request one report every quarter so you review your credit frequently. Note that any incorrect information should be dealt with immediately.
  • Closely review your bank and credit account statements for correct charges, payments, deposits and other activity. Once you spot an irregularity, take action promptly.
  • Shred any papers that have any personal information on them. (Buy an inexpensive shredder or look for community shred events at banks and government offices.)
  • Wipe clean any electronic devices that you give to someone, donate or recycle. If you can't figure out how to get your information off the device, ask a tech-talented friend for assistance.
  • Put passwords on your cell phone and electronic devices so if they get in the wrong hands, the info isn't easily accessible.
